The Civil War Library & Museum, whose symbol is the mounted head of Old Baldy, the war horse of Major General George Gordon Meade (wounded at least fourteen times during the War, he survived his master by ten years), was created more than one hundred years ago to preserve the history of that great conflict, and to promote public education about its causes. Founded in 1888 by veteran officers of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps of the Union, it is the oldest chartered Civil War institution in America.
Formerly located at 1805 Pine Street in Philadelphia, it has now moved to the Union League on Broad Street.
